Last week we were delighted to welcome Professor Ian Bateman, one of the world’s foremost environmental economists, to our two Centres — the Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy (CEEP) and the Centre for Agricultural Economics and Development (CAED). Professor Bateman has been a close colleague and adjunct for over a decade, and his visit was a wonderful opportunity to engage with his current research and thought leadership.
Professor Bateman is a Professor of Environmental Economics and Co-Director of the Land, Environment, Economics and Policy Institute (LEEP) at the University of Exeter in the UK. With an illustrious career spanning decades, he has made significant contributions to the intersection of environmental science, economics, and policy. His influence reaches far beyond academia, having served as an advisor on environmental improvement to senior UK Government Cabinet ministers and holding prominent roles such as Member of the Natural Capital Committee, reporting directly to the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

On Monday, 24 February, around 60 participants joined the seminar either online or in person as Professor Bateman delivered a captivating presentation titled “Bringing the environment into economic analysis of land use policy: Developing AI-enabled decision support tools for interconnected climate, biodiversity and food objectives”.
The seminar highlighted how cutting-edge AI technologies can integrate environmental considerations into land use policy decisions — a critical issue as we navigate the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security.
Professor Bateman’s visit sparked insightful discussions and reinforced the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in addressing global environmental challenges.
His continued collaboration with UWA remains invaluable as we strive to shape policies that promote sustainable development and better management of our environment. We look forward to many more years of partnership with Professor Bateman.
